O2 has had a strong first quarter this year, adding more than 251,000 contract customers following a successful sales drive.
As a result, operating income up to the 31st March rose 3.1% to 287m, which O2 attributed to the growing customer base and strong cost management. The contract numbers for the first quarter this year are up 13% on the same period for 2012, and reflect a year on year increase of 3%.
O2 now boast just over 12 million customers on their network, which accounts for 53% of their customer base. The number of Prepay customers sits at just under 11 million, which is a decrease of 204,900.
O2 have been aggressively pushing their contract offerings within the marketplace, and have seen smartphone penetration reach 53%, a year on year increase of 6%. The Average Revenue Per User from the contract base sits at £26.34, but ARPU from Prepay customers shows a sharp decline of more than 17%, to £6.78
