O2 has had a strong first quarter this year, adding more than 251,000 contract customers following a successful sales drive.

As a result, operating income up to the 31st March rose 3.1% to 287m, which O2 attributed to the growing customer base and strong cost management. The contract numbers for the first quarter this year are up 13% on the same period for 2012, and reflect a year on year increase of 3%.

O2 now boast just over 12 million customers on their network, which accounts for 53% of their customer base. The number of Prepay customers sits at just under 11 million, which is a decrease of 204,900.

O2 have been aggressively pushing their contract offerings within the marketplace, and have seen smartphone penetration reach 53%, a year on year increase of 6%. The Average Revenue Per User from the contract base sits at £26.34, but ARPU from Prepay customers shows a sharp decline of more than 17%, to £6.78

This is another set of strong results that demonstrates our sustained commercial momentum in a highly competitive market,” said O2 CEO, Ronan Dunne. Solid trading activity and continued successful management of customer loyalty is helping us continue to attract and retain large numbers of customers every day.
