Apple's App Store is heading towards 50 billion downloads, and in way of a celebration, Apple will be giving away a prize to the person who downloads the app that takes them to that significant milestone.

The Apple website has a countdown timer, showing the downloads as it surges on towards that magical figure. For the person who downloads the 50 billionth app, Apple will be giving away an App Store Gift Card, worth $10,000.

There will also be gift cards of $500 for users who download one of the first 50 apps after the 50 billion mark has been reached.

Apple have also given details of the most popular apps from its app Store since it launch back in 2008 – with games dominating the list for paid for iPhone apps.

The all-time top paid for app for the iPhone is WhatsApp, followed by Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, Fruit Ninja and Cut The Rope.

The all-time top free iPhone apps are Facebook, Skype, eBay, YouTube and Twitter.

Apple also gave a break down for the all-time iPad apps. Leading the list for all-time paid for apps is Apple's own Pages app, followed by Angry Birds HD, Scrabble for iPad, Garageband and Monopoly for iPad.

The all-time free iPad apps are dominated by media apps. Top of the list is the BBC iPlayer, followed by Skype for iPad, ITV Player, eBay for iPad and 4OD.
