Vodafone History

A subsidiary of Racal Electronics Vodafone was formed in 1984, it became an independent company in 1991 trading as Vodafone Group Plc.

Vodafone then went on to acquire a further two thirds of Talkland in 1996.

Vodafone's acquisition trail continued that year with the purchase of Peoples Phone for £77 million in November, this included consolidation of an existing customer base already using the Vodafone network and 181 retail stores nationwide.

A name change followed in June 1999 after the purchase of AirTouch Communications, trading of the new company Vodafone Airtouch Plc started immediately. The takeover of AirTouch Communications also gave the company a 35% interest in Mannesmann.

In February 2000 the company were part of the largest corporate merger ever, after months of resistance Vodafone's £112 billion offer for Mannesmann was approved.

Shortly after the company was broken up with all manufacturing operations sold and the company reverting to their previous Vodafone Group plc name.

Vodafone are now the world's largest telecommunication network company, operating in 31 countries and servicing 40 others under partner agreements.

The company has 427 million subscribers over 5 continents (2009) with a market value of £71.2 billion (2009).

Vodafone are to introduce a new advertising campaign to highlight a range of services available from the red network, and the star of these adverts is Star Wars character, Yoda.
