sound quality is excellent
This is a wonderful phone, I have had it for a month now, the sound quality is excellent as are all Sony walkmans. This lives up to its reviews and so far has been everything I needed it to be.
Particularly like the PC - mobile connection that allows text by computer, and the conversation application that collects all the text to one person on one screen so you can see the what you have sent them.
I would recommend this phone to anyone that wants an easy mix of phone and iPhone apps.
There are lots of features which are easy to use
I bought the pink version of this phone with my contract and I'm very happy with it. I'd always gone with Nokia before and assumed I wouldn't like the menu layout, but it was fine.
There are lots of features which are easy to use including the camera and the walkman. I only have a couple of issues - one is with the predictive text and how it changes priorities (G'll instead of I'll all the time now), and the other is the sound recorder - you have to record something just to access the recordings.
Overall though, not much to worry about. Great phone, especially in pink!
impressed with the quality and ease of use
I was looking for a phone that could keep up with todays latest products like the iPhone, Blackberry, etc. I didnt want a touch screen phone, but one with big buttons, this phone has this. Also has an excellent Walkman, with a connection that fits standard headphone which was a great bonus for me. Overall im impressed with the quality and ease of use of this product.
All the features are impressive
Just got the phone, big step up from my old W880I. Camera is outstanding, picture quality is amazing. Music player is excellent, really good quality sound. Do like the fact it is wi-fi capable.
All the features are impressive, only one thing that has annoyed me so far. One of the options on the home page is to connect to the wap which is annoying as if it slides up in your pocket it could cost you a fortune without knowing.

Its an easy to hold phone which fits in the pocket
The W995 slide phone is a sleek design with great features.
The screen measures 2.6in diagonally and with the 240 x 320 pixels its hard to fault the sharpness and clarity.
Its an easy to hold phone which fits in the pocket. It measures 97mm tall with the slide closed, 49mm wide, 15mm thick and it weighs 113g.(sixe approx)
The phone features which include, the Walkman, built in wi-fi, an impressive 8.1megapixels camera/ video, radio, messaging/email, speakerphone, video calling, motion sensor, track ID, appliction downloads with a fantastic range of apps to download off the internet, as well as a light which you will find comes in use.
It also allows you to watch videos on youtube or even bbc iplayer.
As well as these features, the phone has a stand which allows the phone to be raised off a surface either horizontally or vertically. There is also a speaker that comes with it. This is great if you want to watch videos as it provides more sound.
The buttons on the side of the phone allow you to change the volume, zoom in and out, switch songs and take pictures.
Everyday uses like sending messages and making phone calls are easy. The Phone will suit anybody. It has good battery life, so will allow you to make calls, send texts and listen to your media for a couple of days without charging.
I found the menu and the phone generally easy to navigate
I love the way that the W995 looks. I have had both the silver and the red version of the phone (the silver one was stolen, not faulty)
The phone slides up easily and feels sturdy, unlike some other slide phones. I found the menu and the phone generally easy to navigate, and I'm impressed with the amount of features it has (even if some of them are just for a laugh).
I find that the videos are quite slow to load, once you have a few on the memory. However, the quality of the videos and the pictures taken on the 8.1 megapixel camera is excellent. I no longer use my digital camera as the quality of the camera on my phone is better and it's more portable.
The internet on the phone is excellent and setting up Wi-Fi was really easy. This is the only phone that I've ever had for more than a month where I'm still not bored of it!
The best feature of this phone is the camera
Had my W995 for about 4 months now and I love it. Being a "walkman" phone the music is great and it comes with an easy to use external speaker which is really handy.
Only negative side is the headphones, the cord you get with them means you have to have it in a top pocket - not so good if your wearing a teashirt!! However this is easily resolved as the headphone jack supports a lot of aftermarket headphones.
This phone is easy to use, video quality is fantastic. I dont use it for the internet but given the screen graphics I would imagine that browsing wouldnt be a problem. The best feature of this phone is the camera, a 8 MP which is fantastic, however its been superceeded now by the Satio which has a better camera.
If you get a good deal I would thoroughly recommend this phone.

It's only downside is its lagg between loading screens
The phones texting and camera capabilities are more than adequate for everyday use, with its music and multimedia applications being really useful for long journeys. It's only downside is its lagg between loading screens. But overall a great phone and robust enough to take day today nocks and scrapes.
I could quite happily watch a full film on this phone.
A good phone for the use of music as it has a sony music walkman built in and the sound quality is very rich, the camera quality and the quality of videos is also excellent and I could quite happily watch a full film on this phone.
My only down fall was the fact it was not as easy to use for emails or to access the internet, I feel the screen needs to be bigger for the use of this. However as a phone for entertainment this phone is perfect!
The Camera is excellent and as with all SE phones
I use the W995 and have done for about 6 months now, I got it as a replacement for the C905. The Camera is excellent and as with all SE phones the best of all 8.1MP available.
I find the screen great to watch films on and the sound quality from the 2 built in speakers supurb. Great battery life, easy to use and easily customisable software are pretty great too. Love the fact it has a standard headphone jack on it too, makes my life so simple and much better for listening to music.
Overall go and get this phone it is a really great alternitive to a touch screen phone and a must if you want a great camera without touch screen or if you want to combine your MP3, phone and MP4 on the move.

good Sony software that runs smoothly and efficiently
A lovely phone, great looking and easy to use, good Sony software that runs smoothly and efficiently. Great camera facilities including video record and playback. Good internet browser, ideal with any internet packages. Downloadable material available from Sony which is great.
very easy to transfer the songs across to the phone from your computer
I love this phone. I got it on a 2 year contract for a good deal with Vodafone and although I don't normally like being tied in for so long I am quite happy to do so with this one.
It has several games already on it, WiFi access which is easily set up for home (and office if you are sneaky enough!) and you can download songs etc for the MP3 aspect of it. It is very easy to transfer the songs across to the phone from your computer and using the BBC iPlayer function on it means I have plenty to watch whilst on the train journeys home from work.
I was worried initially that I would have to buy an extra storage card but have found out the memory it comes with is more than sufficient for several hour long programmes and loads of songs. It also came with a free speaker system that has brilliant sound quality.
Can't fault it at all.
Switches itself off periodically, this became more frequent.
Mine is faulty. Switches itself off periodically, this became more frequent. Trying to call someone, it would ask me to copy my contacts. Now it doesn't recognise my sim card at all, shows the battery icon as empty, wont charge and no network coverage. Love the working phone, but its really naughty considering what an individual pays for this handset, even in contract payments. I'm informed I need a software update, yeah right!!!

After 6 months with the W995 I cannot fault it at all
Another great addition to the walkman series from Sony!
Many software applications are improved with noticeable higher graphics resolution. After 6 months with the W995 I cannot fault it at all. Easy walkman start up. High picture quality and easy picture display in browser setting, I would strongly recommend.
Surely one of the best phones of 2009
Surely one of the best phones of 2009 - the latest release of the Sony Walkman range combines everything great in a phone, amazing camera, massive music and storage capability and access to the internet.
The phone comes with access to a free-download site where you can download films to watch on your phone, overwise you can transfer films from your computer. There's also a handy speaker stand for the phone.
Some usability issues; the internet donest always connect and sometimes the buttons are a bit small. The back panel of the phone is constantly falling off!
Comes with a handy little stand and is very stylish
The best phone I've ever had, easy to use comes with great features like a pedometer and a light very good, for day to day use. Can hold several thousand messages, although can start to get abit slow reading through the messages with this many. Comes with a handy little stand and is very stylish.

only had it 4 weeks when it decided just to turn itself off
Yeah its a nice phone but I only had it 4 weeks when it decided just to turn itself off and wouldnt turn on again. The phone was fine for a couple more weeks then funny enough the same thing happens again, I'm getting fed up with this phone that its always breaking, they told me it was the software and that alot of people have the same problem.
had a major glitch when I travelled abroad
I had my phone for 4 weeks now. I had a major glitch when I travelled abroad. It took almost 1 hour to turn it on (this was 2 weeks ago). Now it just froze and I can't manage to turn it on at all.
It's so annoying but a phone is a critical hardware nowadays and it can't just break like this. I would replace it for another with less features but that would be reliable.
sitting texting the internal screen broke
I have had my phone for a less than a month and when sitting texting the internal screen broke. I hadnt dropped it or slammed the phone closed to quickly. I agree with spikey this may be a manufacturers fault and we shouldnt be made to have to fork out to fix it!

If I didn't keep having faults I would say this is a good phone
I love this phone, when it works! Only had it a month and it decides to turn itself off occasionaly, had to send it back because it said "no network coverage"... had that fixed and now I have to send it back again as its emergency calls only!
If I didn't keep having faults I would say this is a good phone but now I'm just annoyed with it and want a different one all together.
Mine decided to die last week
I have had to take mine back now twice in 2 weeks. As mentioned below, it is far from fault free. Mine decided to die last week, sent it off, got it back a couple of days ago and it has now decided to mix up all of my phone numbers in the contact list so I now have no idea who I am calling.
more user friendly than the K series touchscreen
The phone is more user friendly than the K series touchscreen which at the time would get very annoying to operate. The only bad things I can say about the phone only having had it in my posession for a few weeks, is that it took me a while to figure out how to remove the battery from the back of the phone. Also the battery cover would come off very easily when the phone was dropped from any kind of height.

I downloaded opera mini which I find way better than the bundled browser
Two weeks since I got this, but it died after I downloaded and synced it with iSync on MacBook. I would say far from fault free. It takes an eternity to start from shutdown. Mine seems to occasionally start running facebook all by itself and sometimes begins facebook when I use my shortcut to begining new SMS. The gps feature chews the battery power.
Having said all that the phone is growing on me. I downloaded opera mini which I find way better than the bundled browser. The camera is very good for a phone, but occasionally I find it a bit slow to take the picture.
no problem with the phone, it's small, neat, good looking
I have no problem with the phone, it's small, neat, good looking and the battery - if used sensibly - is the usual SE long life.
The first moan is that the video quality is still VDA, and not up to much. My most important moan - and buyers beware is that my internal screen broke. I was told I must have hit it hard, but I know that it wasn't whacked against anything. Apparently, pressure at the base of the screen fractured it. This will cost me up to £90 to repair. I would love to hear from anyone else who has experienced this fault? If this is a manufacturer's fault, then we should be warned.
I love it and all of its features
I'm now on my 3rd phone in 4 weeks. My 1st one crashed while I was watching a movie and wouldnt turn back on. The 2nd phone crashed because my message memory was full and it also decided to delete my contacts. However, it is a good phone, I love it and all of its features, but just be careful with overheating etc.

Sony's new benchmark phone, it has everything
The W995 is Sony's new benchmark phone, it has everything! It is part of the walkman range which instantly screams out music, and with that you get the soft bud earphones, the 3.5mm space for headphones, individual speakers with excellent quality built into the phone and an extra set of speakers.
On top of this it sports an impressive 8.1 MP camera, Wifi capability, 60 free movies to download and an 8GB memory card. 10/10 Sony, definitely making up for previous phones you produced.
best walkman phone to date
I feel this to be the best walkman phone to date, loads of stuff inside as soon as you receive inc a 8gb memory card and also some mini speakers which sound great and loud. WIFI is also a plus many themes to download, oh and you also get 60 free movie downloads which you can use with in a year.
I agree totally with all of the rave reviews
Hi all, I agree totally with all of the rave reviews, however my main reason for this review is that it is so easy to use. I have had a number of different phones, makes and models but Sony Ericsson have come out top every time for quality and intuition.
As a non-techie-technophobe girly that goes a hell of a way in my book all the functionality without once wanting to throw it at the wall or ask my 7 year old son what to do next! A one stop phone that does it all (I mean really all!!), good quality, really sexy red and yes above all user friendly.

slide is very smooth, and there is a distinctive click when it opens
This phone is amazing! I am not joking, it is the best phone I have ever seen. The quality of the camera in the C905 (Sony Ericsson's 8 Mega Pixel Cyber-Shot phone) is only slightly better than this phones camera!
The slide on this phone is very smooth, and there is a distinctive click when it opens, and when you click a button, it also clicks, so you can feel that you have actually done something, this helps me a lot when I am trying to text quickly.
The Walkman... wooooah is all I have to say... but I will say some more, the quality of the music is at almost the same standard as the quality of music from the iPod.
The screen I think is a bit on the small side for a person who is used to watching movies on a 52" TV. But once you actually get into the movie, the quality is just immense, and you forget that you are watching it on your phone.
The 3.5mm earphone jack is a new addition to Walkman phones, and it is amazing and a welcome relief, no more carrying around the other lead. The placement of the jack is really good, at the top, bang in the centre
There is also a little metal flip 'stand', before I bought the phone, like all other smart people, I read A LOT of views, and I have to say the only bad point anyone said about the phone is the stand. They said it had a bad design and would snap easily, that is utter rubbish. The joint is of super quality, and will only snap if it is thrown on the ground, or if someone purposely pulls it back.
The stand also keeps the phone very still, even when put on a desk and you shake it quite hard, it doesn't top over, this is trying to replicate being on a bus or a train, and the train shaking, is shaking the table at which your phone would be.
The speakers included with the phone (tube speakers) are a very good addition, they are of a good quality, go quite loud, but a downside is, they drain the battery very quickly, and you can not hook the phone up to the power supply (to charge it) AND have the tube speakers in.
The speakers that are actually on/in the phone itself are of superb quality, they go very loud, and the quality of them are very good until you start reaching the very highest volumes of the phone. A downside is, that when you have it on max volume, and the stand up, the phone makes so much vibrations, that it can nock the stand down, or just shake the phone off a desk and result in it falling a fair bit, so don't put the volume on max unless holding it in your hand.
The quality of the earphones included with the phone are very good, but no match to professional ones, like Boss in-ear ones.
The battery life on the phone is good when not doing anything, and it lasts a week easily, if you are listening to music through earphones on about medium volume, the battery life isn't changed much. But if you have it on max volume through the tube speakers, say goodbye to the battery.
The main downside I believe for the phone is the price. That is all! Overall a very good phone, with very few, but quite noticable, flaws.
