Handset Overview

The first Nokia phone with an internal FM radio antenna, so there is no need for connecting an external headset. The Nokia 5030 Xpress Music phone is a low budget device with an amazing battery standby time, offering up to 10 hours talk-time and a full day's music playback in one charge. The 5030 Xpress Music has a specially designed rear that looks like a portable FM radio, and is designed to stand up on its side as a standalone device. One touch selection keys are located on the side of the phone, offering quick access to the FM radio application and a number of preset channels. The handset will be available in two colours, Graphite and Red.

The menus are simple and easy to use, and the design is nice.

The Nokia 5030's selling point is the built-in FM radio with no antenna or headset required. In my area however, reception is poor, causing the sound to be crackly. These days I would expect a digital radio instead. As my reason for buying this phone was more motivated by the price than the number of features however, this does not bother me.

However, a few things do let it down. The battery cover is awkward to remove when you need to replace the battery or SIM card. You won't have to do this often, but it's a pain when you do. If you knock the radio button by mistake, the radio will come on over the loudspeaker. It can be turned off again by holding the radio button for a few seconds but having the radio turn on unexpectedly, perhaps in your pocket in a meeting may be embarrassing.

Overall, if you want a basic mobile phone for voice calls and SMS, the Nokia 5030 performs adequately for the price I paid, and I have not encountered any serious flaws such as crashes. The radio is a nice extra, but not - in my opinion the primary reason to purchase the phone. The menus are simple and easy to use, and the design is nice.

FM Radio will be something you will use time and time again

Just purchased this phone today, I am well impressed with it. No, it has no camera, but how often do we all start taking pictures when we first get a new phone, then dont bother with the camera again?. Yet, the FM Radio will be something you will use time and time again. A simple phone, good price and looks modern....would recommend to anyone.

Mobile phones are constantly being updated in a constantly evolving industry with huge demands. Where camera phones go up by the megapixel on a monthly basis and the next big feature just around the corner, it certainly can be confusing finding the right mobile phone.

Most handsets now could be classed as 'smart phones' based on where mobile phones were a few years ago with the current crop of buzz words - 3G, HSPDA, megapixel, social networking, apps, A-GPS and more. Thats why reading impartial user reviews is the best way of deciding what phone to buy next!
