Motorola has updated details of their Android 4.0 upgrade plans, leaving some fans upset at their device missing out on getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update. According to Motorola, an update is only set to be issued if in some way it can offer an improvement to the handset. If this proves not to be the case, then the device will be stuck with the Gingerbread Android 2.3 OS. Which on the surface of it, seems all well and good. After all, who wants to get an update to their device that offers no noticeable level of improvement? The problem comes when, reading...

Industry analyst Gartner has announced in a report that in the first quarter of 2012, Android smartphones held a 56% market share, easily beating the 22.9% held by the Apple iPhone. The data from Gartner also showed that Samsung were by far the most popular manufacturer of Android devices, generating nearly 44% of that market share. Other manufacturers of Android devices, including HTC and Motorola, were all at less than 10%. Combined figures showed that one in every two smartphone sales was either a Samsung device or the iPhone. Competition is tough in the smartphone market, and right now it is RIM, the...

One of the most well known names in the mobile phone industry, Motorola has been around since the beginning - one of the pioneers in communications. Motorola produced one of the biggest selling ranges in mobile phone history with their RAZR range - the ultra slim compact flip phone selling over 120 million units alone in 2005.

After a quiet period over the past few years Motorola have focused heavily on producing Android mobile phones, a platform which is helping Motorola to emerge as a force again within the industry and continue to gain a strong, loyal following having produced some exciting and powerful handsets of late.

History of Motorola phones

Motorola are one of the most well known names in communications, not just for mobile phones - pioneering the world's first working cellular system using GSM standard in 1991 in a demonstration. They were the world number one mobile phone manufacturer for selling mobile phone handsets until overtaken by Finnish company Nokia in 1998.

In 2000 Motorola supplied the cellular network to BT Cellnet in the UK - the world's first commercial GPRS network.

In 2005 their RAZR line of mobile phone handsets was so popular in the compact fold format selling over 120 million units that put Motorola to number two slot again in 2005 for phone sales for manufacturers.

Today Motorola focus on producing Android mobile phones and are seeing revivals of their stock with consumers with the Motorola Milestone and Dext. Other interesting releases include the Motorola Backflip and the Flipout which continue to offer options to suit a variety of consumer tastes.
